Lexington Hospitalist Program

What is a Hospitalist?
A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Because hospitalists do not have a practice outside of the hospital, they can focus all of their attention on patients inside the hospital. Hospitalists manage your hospital care, coordinating and consulting with specialists, monitoring your progress and staying in touch with you and your family and primary care physician. Most hospitalists are either board certified or board eligible in internal medicine.

The Hospitalist Program at Altoona Regional Health System
The Lexington Hospitalist Program is made up of a team of nine board certified physicians and four midlevel practitioners, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Doctors include: Stuart Ackerman, D.O.; Ashish Behl, M.D.; Thomas Covaleski, M.D.; Zane Gates, M.D.; Gregory Martinek, D.O.; Mahammed Rahman, M.D.; John Reinhardt, D.O.; Ryan Ridenour, D.O.; Amie Roger, M.D.; Madhavi Singh, M.D.; Rajesh Subramania, M.D., and Hassan Zamman, M.D. Midlevel practitioners include: Lori Daughenbaugh, CRNP; Heather Gides, PA-C; Melissa Hall, PA-C, and Roseann Kaczor-Vassalotti, PA-C. Christine Snavely is the office manager.

How the program works
When you are admitted to the hospital, your primary care physician brings your hospitalist up to date about your condition or medical history and transfers the management of your care to the hospitalist team. The hospitalist team updates your primary care physician about your progress and will coordinate your care with him or her to a smooth transition back to your doctor after you are discharged from the hospital.

What patients are seen by the hospitalist?
Currently, patients of the following practices are seen by hospitalists: Blair Medical Associates Family Practice, Mainline Medical Associates, Northern Cambria Medical Center, and Patton Family Medical Center, along with some patients who come into the hospital without a primary care physician.

What are the advantages of being cared for by a hospitalist?
Hospitalists work only in hospitals and are available day and night. They closely monitor you during your hospitalization and are accessible in cases of emergencies and if concerns arise. They will manage you throughout your entire continuum of hospital care: seeing patients in the ER, admitting patients to inpatient units, following patients as necessary into the critical care unit, and organizing post-acute care. In addition, your hospitalist knows every specialist and department in the hospital, ensuring fast turnaround of tests and treatments. Our group of hospitalists provides the highest quality of care in a timely and personalized manner.
